From Burnout to Booked Out: Breana Velfling on Building a VA Business That Supports Motherhood
Breana Velfling didn’t plan to become a business coach. But life—specifically, life as a mom—has a way of rerouting us toward the thing we were always meant to build.
After moving in with her mom during a difficult season, Breana was determined to find a way to provide for her family without falling into a sea of scams or low-paying jobs. That decision led her to virtual assisting—first as a one-woman show helping business owners with inboxes and calendars, and eventually as the leader of a full VA consulting agency and coaching program that helps moms build sustainable businesses from home.
Breana joined The Mama Making Podcast to share how she did it, what she’s learned along the way, and how motherhood continues to shape her work.
It Started with a Need (and a Laptop)
Like many entrepreneurial journeys, Breana’s started with necessity. Her partner had been laid off, and no work-from-home jobs were panning out. Instead of giving into frustration, she saw an opportunity: create something for herself.
She started small—calendar management, inbox support, admin tasks—and grew quickly through word of mouth. With every client, her confidence grew. Eventually, she partnered with another VA to form an agency that offers shared clients and mutual support.
What Does a VA Actually Do?
The term "virtual assistant" is broad—and Breana breaks it down beautifully in the episode. While many VAs start with admin tasks, the work can include everything from customer service and social media to client onboarding, webinar setup, and full project management.
And the best part? You can shape it to fit your skills and interests. Whether you’re helping a coach with lead funnels or a photographer with scheduling, the role is endlessly adaptable.
Mom Skills = Business Skills
Breana makes a powerful case for why moms make excellent VAs. From time management and multitasking to communication and intuition, motherhood builds the exact qualities that make for successful client support.
She also encourages moms not to undersell themselves. Just because you’re new doesn’t mean you’re not valuable. Confidence, Breana says, is what changes your pricing—and your business.
Delegation Is a Growth Strategy
Whether you're starting your own VA journey or thinking about hiring one, this episode is packed with insight. Breana shares how to figure out what tasks to delegate (hint: start with the ones that drain you), how to price services, and why business owners should view a VA as an investment, not a luxury.
Real Talk on Working from Home
As a mom of two, Breana keeps it real about what it’s like to work while raising little ones. From timers and activity bins to weekend boundaries and outdoor work setups, she shares practical ways she stays focused—and why grace is part of the plan.
She also reflects on what it means to be a mom first and a business owner second, and how her kids motivate her work. One moment that hit home? Her daughter pulling out a toy laptop and saying, "I’m working on my business."
Representation matters—and Breana is building a business her kids are proud to see.
The Coaching Programs
Breana offers two coaching paths:
A 3-month Kickstarter program for moms starting their VA business from scratch
A 6-month scale program for those ready to grow, refine, and take it full-time
Each one is built with strategy, confidence-building, and real-life motherhood in mind.
